BUCHAREST (Romania), October 19 (SeeNews) – Bucharest bourse indices gained strong ground on Monday in low liquidity and weak volatility as investors await the market to take a clearer direction, brokers said.
The blue-chip BET index of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, BVB, rose 2.95% to 4,648.50 points. The BET-FI index, which tracks the country's five regional investment funds, the SIFs, added 1.29% to 23,481.92 points.
The composite BET-C index jumped 2.24% to 2,833.20 and the ROTX index of Romania's 15 most liquid stocks, a joint index of the BVB and the Vienna Stock Exchange, climbed 2.78% to 9,810.84.
“In my opinion, investors wait to see where the market will head in the next days. Their anticipation and cautiousness resulted in low liquidity and almost no volatility on the market,” one broker told SeeNews.
BVB's turnover dropped to 11.9 million lei ($4.1 million/2.8 million euro) from 30.3 million lei on Friday. The number of traded shares decreased to 32.9 million compared to 70.4 million on Friday.
SIF 4 Muntenia ended up 1.36% at 0.745 lei in the day's largest turnover of 1.3 million lei. Blue-chip bank Banca Transilvania jumped 4.14% to 1.76 lei on deals worth 1.23 million lei, Monday’s second largest turnover. SIF 5 Oltenia appreciated by 1.72% to 1.18 lei in the session’s third largest turnover of 1.2 million lei.
The other blue-chip lender, BRD, closed up 1.57% at 12.9 lei in 1.0 million lei turnover. Austria’s Erste Bank was up 1.4% to 130 lei in deals worth 831,000 lei.
SIF 1 Banat Crisana was the only SIF to lose ground, shedding 0.91% to 1.09 lei in 858,000 lei turnover
Blue-chip oil and gas group Petrom climbed 4.4% to 0.285 lei in 917,000 lei turnover. Blue-chip oil and gas company Dafora gained 3.6% to 0.115 lei in 603,000 lei turnover, while oil refinery Rompetrol Rafinare surged 5.39% to 0.0645 lei in 665,000 lei.
The BET-XT index, which tracks the 25 most liquid companies on the bourse, including the SIFs, gained 2.44% to 460.20 points. The BET-NG, which includes companies from the energy sector and utilities, advanced 2.88% to 622.83 points.
Rasdaq-C, the composite index of the over-the-counter market RASDAQ, edged up 0.24% to 2,239.44. Turnover on the RASDAQ rose to 2.1 million lei from 1.8 million lei on Friday.
