BUCHAREST (Romania), October 29 (SeeNews) – Romanian share indices on Thursday halted a run of negative sessions, cheered by better-than-expected data on U.S. economic growth in the third quarter, brokers said.
The BET-FI, which tracks the country's five regional investment funds, the SIFs, was the best-performing index, jumping 3.6% to 21,417.63 points. The blue-chip BET index of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, BVB, rose 2.2% to 4,469.58 points.
The composite BET-C index gained 2.6% to 2,659.52 and the ROTX index of Romania's 15 most liquid stocks, a joint index of the BVB and the Vienna Stock Exchange, was up 1.83% to 9,325.15.
“Following the recent pretty strong falls on our bourse and considering today's signs of a positive trend on the global markets, it was normal to have sharp upward corrections. Investors, both at home and abroad, took heart from the third-quarter growth figures for the U.S. economy, which came in higher than expected,” one broker told SeeNews.
BVB's turnover rose to 45.8 million lei ($15.7 million/10.6 million euro) from 31.8 million lei, including 4.9 million lei worth of bond trades, on Wednesday. The number of traded shares was up to 67.4 million from 50.7 million on Wednesday.
SIF 5 Oltenia dominated trading, surging 4.85% to 1.08 lei in the day's largest turnover of 12 million lei. SIF 2 Moldova added 4.3% to 0.97 lei on deals worth 8.5 million lei, Thursday’s second largest turnover.
Blue-chip lender Banca Transilvania closed down 1.14% at 1.74 lei on the regular market in the session’s third largest turnover of 3.3 million lei. The other blue-chip bank, BRD, jumped 5.13% to 12.3 lei in deals worth 1.6 million lei, and Austria’s Erste Bank added 1.82% to 117.8 lei in turnover of 1.9 million lei.
SIF 1 Banat Crisana ended 5.0% higher at 1.05 lei in deals worth 1.45 million lei. SIF 3 Transilvania gained 2.44% to 0.63 lei in 3.2 million lei turnover.
Blue-chip oil and gas group OMV Petrom ended unchanged at 0.265 lei in 2.7 million lei turnover and blue-chip oil and gas company Dafora surged 5.88% to 0.108 lei in deals worth 586,000 lei.
The BET-XT index, which tracks the 25 most liquid companies on the bourse, including the SIFs, advanced 2.59% to 432.40 points. The BET-NG, which includes companies from the energy sector and utilities, was up 2.62% to 598.02 points.
Rasdaq-C, the composite index of the over-the-counter market RASDAQ, edged up 0.08% to 2,198.08. Turnover on the RASDAQ fell slightly to 1.15 million lei from 1.25 million lei on Wednesday.
