December 5 (SeeNews) - Bosnia's Sarajevo international airport said on Tuesday it has launched works on expanding its Terminal B to accommodate rising passenger numbers.
The airport operator said in a statement that demolition of the old Terminal A building has begun, which will create the necessary space for expansion of Terminal B.
Terminal A was used for commercial traffic from 1969 to 1992, and was transformed into office space after Terminal B was built.
Following Terminal A's demolition, which is planned to be completed by end-2017, works will begin on expanding Terminal B.
The airport operator earlier said that Terminal B will be expanded by 9,000 sq m to increase its passenger processing capacity above the current 1 million mark.
In October, works also began on increasing the number of check-in counters at Terminal B from 12 to 15, as well as installing an additional baggage checking X-ray machine along with new conveyor belts.
The number of passengers handled by Sarajevo airport thus far in 2017 totals 900,000 and represents a milestone for the airport, which hopes to welcome one million passengers next year by introducing new routes
In 2016, passenger numbers at Sarajevo airport increased by 8.5% year-on-year to 838,966.
