April 4 (SeeNews) - The United States will provide $50 million (45 mln euro) in aid to Moldova to help the country limit the humanitarian and economic effects of the war in Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.
"I want you to know that, in all your efforts, you have a committed partner in the United States. To this end, I am proud to announce today that the United States will provide an additional $50 million to help the Government of Moldova and its people cope with the effects of Russia’s brutal war," Thomas-Greenfield said on Sunday during a meeting with Moldovan prime minister Natalia Gavrilita, as quoted in a press release issued by the U.S. Mission to the UN.
This assistance is in addition to the more than $30 million that the U.S have provided Moldova for its humanitarian efforts, which ensures refugees have food to eat, clean water to drink, and all the services and health supplies they need.
"We will continue to ramp up this support in the days and weeks to come," Thomas-Greenfield added.
In March, the European Commission signed a legally binding agreement with Moldova on border management cooperation between the country's border guards and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In March, Romania's government approved a non-reimbursable aid of 100 million euro to Moldova to back its efforts for sustainable development and reform, while the European Parliament said it will provide 150 million euro in macro-financial aid to Moldova to help it cover part of its external financing needs.
