July 2 (SeeNews) - KazMunayGas International (KMGI), the parent company of Romania's Rompetrol Rafinare, said on Friday that its Petromidia Navodari refinery stopped work after a fire broke down at one of the installations, killing one and injuring another five.
"Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, five of our colleagues are in medical care at Constanta County Hospital. We are sorry to inform you that a person has been identified as deceased," KMG International Group said in a press release.
At this moment, the fire inside the the diesel oil refining installation (HPM) installation is isolated and stabilised, the company added.
Earlier on Friday, KMG International announced that an incident took place on the platform of the Petromidia refinery, within the diesel oil refining installation.
"According to the internal crisis management procedures, the technological processes within the refinery have been stopped safely," the company said at the time.
Petromidia Refinery is the largest Romanian oil refinery and one of the largest in Eastern Europe, located in Navodari, Constanta county.
In the first quarter of 2021, the Petromidia refinery processed 1.26 million tonnes of raw materials, a volume similar to the same period of last year. Also, the degree of refining capacity utilization amounted to 84%, more than 10% higher compared to the same period of 2020.
Rompetrol Rafinare is the core asset of Dutch-based KMG International, formerly The Rompetrol Group, which is fully owned by Kazakhstan's state-owned energy company KazMunayGaz Group. Through its two oil refineries, Rompetrol Rafinare provides over 40% of Romania's refining capacity and is the only producer of polymers in the country.
Rompetrol Rafinare's shares traded 1.96% lower at 0.0500 lei ($0.12/0.10 euro) as at 1349 CET on Friday on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
