December 28 (SeeNews) - The two units of state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije's (EPS) Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant are temporarily out of service due to accidents but Serbia's total energy output will not be affected to a significant degree, the energy ministry said.
The capacity of each of the lignite-fired units is 620 megawatts (MW), according to EPS' website.
The B1 unit was shut down on Sunday due to a fire, while the B2 unit stopped operation a day later, after a pulveriser, used to grind coal before combustion, exploded, the ministry said in a press release on Monday. No workers were injured in the accidents, the ministry noted.
Energy minister Zorana Mihajlovic told a cabinet meeting that Serbia has enough energy reserves until the end of the winter season, and stressed there is no fear that the supply of thermal energy will be interrupted. The production of electricity from renewable sources, most notably at hydropower plants, has increased, the ministry said.
Representatives of EPS said during the session said that both units are expected to be reconnected to the grid as soon as Tuesday.
EPS operates eight thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 5,171MW.
