March 6 (SeeNews) - Serbia hopes that Morava airport in Kraljevo will handle 20,000 passengers in 2019, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic has said.
"Our plan is to have 20,000 passengers in Kraljevo in 2019 and 100,000 next year," Mihajlovic said in a video file posted on the website of Serbian public broadcaster RTS on Tuesday.
Last month, Mihajlovic said the government plans to invest 8.5 million euro ($9.6 million) in the overhaul of the runway of Morava military airport in Kraljevo, in order to open it for civil aviation operations in June. After the overhaul, Morava airport will be able to handle flights of ATR-72 and Boeing 737 aircraft. At a later stage, after a further upgrade and expansion of the runway, the airport will be able to receive all civilian aircraft without limitations, including Boeing 747.
Morava airport, also known as Ladjevci airport, is a joint civilian-military facility located near the city of Kraljevo, in central Serbia. Тhe Serbian government completed the first phase of the reconstruction of Morava airport in 2011 allowing the handling of passenger aircraft with up to 100 seats. However, no commercial flights have been operated from the airport thus far.
