June 5 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to open for traffic a new section of the Belgrade bypass road this month, infrastructure minister Goran Vesic said on Monday.
“Once we open the new section, all cargo traffic from the Gazelle bridge from the direction of Novi Sad and Sid to Nis will be redirected and vehicles will no longer need to pass through the centre of Belgrade,” Vesic said, as quoted in a government press release.
The new 9.6-km section of the Belgrade bypass, part of Sector B, runs from Strazevica to Bubanj Potok, and includes the Beli Potok tunnel, two bridges, four overpasses, and two loops at Avala and Bubanj Potok.
In February, Vesic said that this section of the Belgrade bypass would open for traffic on June 1.
The design stage began a few months ago for the final 31-km section of the bypass road between Bubanj Potok and Pancevo, also known as Sector C, Vesic added.
Sector C will cost around 500 million euro ($534 million) and is considered to be the most complex part of the project, as its construction involves building a bridge over the Danube, 11 viaducts and two tunnels.
In April 2019, Serbia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China's Power Construction Corporation (PowerChina) and Azerbaijan's civil engineering company Azvirt for the construction of Sector C.
