BELGRADE (Serbia), January 31 (SeeNews) – Serbia's government plans to complete the reconstruction of Pancevo bridge over the Danube in Belgrade by the end of 2018, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic has said.
The Belgrade city government will modernise the bridge's lighting facilities, while state-run railway operator Zeleznice Srbije will invest in works for protection against corrosion, Mihajlovic said, according to a press releases issued by the government on Tuesday.
In addition, all unlawfully developed gravel pits in the vicinity of the bridge will be closed and their operations will be moved to new locations controlled by the city authorities. The Belgrade city government expects to receive 4 million euro from taxes and port fees annually as a result of the relocation of the gravel pits, Mihajlovic said.
The bridge, located in the Palilula urban municipality of Belgrade, has two lanes in both directions for road traffic, and one rail track.
Pancevo was the only bridge over the Danube in Belgrade until December 2014, when the Pupin Bridge opened in the municipality of Zemun connecting it to the Banat side of Serbia's capital.
