June 24 (SeeNews) - Romania's ruling coalition of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) and its junior partner ALDE said on Monday it will support central bank governor Mugur Isarescu for a new term in office.
"The discussion that we had today led us to the conclusion that we will support a renewal of Mugur Isarescu's mandate," ALDE leader and senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu said in a televised statement broadcast by local Digi24.
In the next central bank board of directors, PSD will have four representatives, the National Liberal Party (PNL) will have two, while ALDE and the Union Save Romania (USR) will each have one, Tariceanu added.
The five-year mandate of the nine-member central bank board is ending in October, whereas Isarescu's mandate ended in May.
Isarescu has been serving as central bank governor since 1990.
However, in May last year, he said he is not considering a new mandate, since he is 70 years old.
