June 3 (SeeNews) - Romania's unemployment rate rose to 4.8% in April from 4.6% in March as more people lost their jobs due to the coronavirus crisis, the national statistical office, INS, said on Wednesday, citing provisional data.
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate must be interpreted in correlation with data published by the labour ministry which indicated on a number of 725,200 employment contracts suspended due to technical unemployment as of April 30, INS said in a statement.
On an annual comparison basis, Romania's jobless rate was 0.9 pp higher in April.
There were 432,000 unemployed people in Romania in April, up from 414,000 in March and 355,000 in April 2019.
The jobless rate among women was 3.9% versus 5.4% among men.
The unemployment rate among adults aged between 25 and 74 was estimated at 3.8%. The percentage of unemployed people aged between 25 and 74 in the total number of unemployed was 74.9% in April.
Romania's workforce is estimated at about 9.0 million out of a population of some 19.5 million.
