November 20 (SeeNews) - Romania's border police said on Friday that it is conducting thorough checks on persons and cars that enter and exit the country in response to potential security threats.
"The measure is temporary, and aims to prevent persons coming from conflict zones, who can carry out activities that pose a real threat to internal and external security, from crossing the border," the Border Police said in a statement.
To avoid congestion, the Border Police advise passengers to use all existing border checkpoints, and not just the main ones.
Earlier in the day The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEEF) said there is an urgent need for additional migrant reception capacity along the Western Balkans migrant corridor.
Following the terrorist attacks in Paris, the countries along the Western Balkan migrant corridor tightened border control and closed their borders for economic migrants.
"In the last couple of days, we have witnessed governments instituting a range of restrictions against movements of refugees and migrants from Greece through the Western Balkans and further northwards," the UNHCR, the IOM and the UNICEF said in a joint statement. "These measures by states are creating tension at border crossings and a domino effect, leaving in total limbo some refugees and migrants stranded at different border points."
The international aid agencies also said there is urgent need to put in place additional reception capacity at the points of entry, to allow for decent and effective accommodation, compliance with child protection standards, assistance, registration and screening of the thousands of people arriving every day.
On the evening of November 13, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, consisting of mass shootings, suicide bombings, and hostage-taking, occurred in the French capital Paris and its northern suburb, Saint-Denis, claimed more than 129 people and left 368 people wounded.
