December 11 (SeeNews) - Kosovo's finance ministry said on Monday that it has provided 80 million euro ($86 million) to the central Termokos heating system in the capital, Pristina, to build a solar thermal power plant aimed at producing energy for district heating.
The EU and German development bank KfW have financed the project through grants of 21.5 million euro and 31.6 million euro respectively, whereas the EBRD has provided a 23.2 million euro loan, the finance ministry said in a press release. Kosovo’s government is contributing 4.4 million euro.
The project involves the construction of a solar thermal plant in Pristina, through which the thermal energy production capacity of Termokos will be expanded up to 50 MW. The facility will use technology to store summer-generated energy for winter central heating.
With the project’s completion, as many as 38,000 citizens who are currently not part of the heating network will start having access to Termokos services, the ministry has said. According to its website, Termokos currently serves some 20,000 people.
Established in 1960, Termokos was incorporated in 2006, and it operates under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Pristina.
