SKOPJE (North Macedonia), August 12 (SeeNews) – The number of tourists who visited North Macedonia in June decreased by 95.6% year-on-year to 5,210, the country's statistical office said on Wednesday, revealing the impact of the restrictions imposed on the travel and hospitality industry in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Domestic tourists in the country numbered 3,347 in June, 88.9% less than a year earlier, while the number of international visitors fell by an annual 97.9% to 1,863, Makstat said in a statement.
The number of overnights spent by tourists in North Macedonia in the review period decreased by 94.6% on the year to 14,179.
Out of the total number of foreign tourists who visited North Macedonia in June, 11.6% came from Bulgaria, 9.8% from Serbia and 8.1% from Turkey.
North Macedonia confirmed its first case of coronavirus on February 26. In mid-March, the government ordered the closure of the country's two international airports, in Skopje and in Ohrid, and banned foreign nationals from entering the country.
The country has confirmed a total of 12,083 coronavirus cases, including 529 deaths, as of August 11, health minister Venko Filipce said in a Twitter post.
