SKOPJE (North Macedonia), July 13 (SeeNews) – The number of tourists who visited North Macedonia in May shrank 99.2% year-on-year to 838, the country's statistical office said on Monday, revealing the impact of the restrictions imposed on the travel and hospitality industry in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Domestic tourists in the country numbered 655, 97.8% less than in May 2019, while the number of international visitors fell by an annual 99.7% to 183 in May, Makstat said in a statement.
The number of overnights spent by tourists in North Macedonia in the review period decreased by 97.6% on the year to 4,946.
Out of the total number of foreign tourists who visited North Macedonia in May, 32.8% came from Hungary, 11.5% from Poland and 9.8% from Austria.
North Macedonia confirmed its first case of coronavirus on February 26. In mid-March, the government ordered the closure of the country's two international airports, in Skopje and in Ohrid, and banned foreigners from entering the country.
The country has confirmed a total of 8,111 coronavirus cases, including 382 deaths, as of July 12, health minister Venko Filipce said in a Twitter post.
