November 15 (SeeNews) - The industrial output of Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniestria for the first ten months of 2007 rose by 53.5% on the year, Transdniestria's Economy Ministry said on Thursday.
The region's industrial production through October totalled $654.1 million (447 million euro), the ministry said in a statement.
The power generating sector's output through October rose 57.3% on the year to $80.5 million. The output of the region's main industrial sector, ferrous metallurgy, was 65.3% higher than a year earlier at $308.3 million. The ministry said 21 local companies halted operations over the past ten months.
Transdniestria is located on the left bank of the River Dniestr in eastern Moldova. It broke away from Moldova in 1990 as its largely Slavic, pro-Russian population feared that the country's Romanian-speaking majority would unite with neighbouring Romania.
