November 15 (SeeNews) - The number of tourists visiting Moldova rose by 8.6% on the year to 244,587 in the first nine months of the year, the statistics bureau,BNS, said on Tuesday.
As many as 24% of the nearly 88,710 foreign tourists who visited the country during January-September came from Romania, 13% came from Ukraine and Russian tourists accounted for 8.1%, the statistics bureau said in a statement.
Tourists booked 1.22 million overnights in Moldova in the period under review, down 3.6% from a year earlier. Foreign tourists booked 180,186 overnights in the nine months through September, down 6.7% compared to 2015.
The statistics bureau did not provide monthly figures.
The number of tourists staying in Moldova dropped by 1.5% on the year to 278,855 in 2015. Tourists booked 1.505 million overnights in Moldova last year, down 0.6% on the year.
