The average age of vehicles in Macedonia is 18 years despite the government's efforts to prevent the ex-Yugoslav country from becoming Europe's car scrap yard. In early 2005 the government banned imports of vehicles older than six years and cut import duties on new vehicles to 8.0% from 10% . It has also scraped a 7.5% excise duty levied on new cars.
