October 11 (SeeNews) - A Macedonian parliamentary committee has approved an extension of the state of emergency at the country's borders with Greece and Serbia until June 30, 2017 to prevent irregular migrants from crossing the country.
The six-month extension proposed by the government has to be approved by the parliament to take effect, Macedonian state-run broadcaster MRT said on Monday.
Since the beginning of 2015, 700,000 migrants and refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East, Asia and Africa have crossed into Macedonia from Greece and travelled north to the border with Serbia, trying to reach western Europe, MRT added citing data from the interior ministry.
