October 6 (SeeNews) - Foreign tourist arrivals in Croatia rose 3% on the year to 3.7 million in August, with overnights increasing 7.6% to 24 million, data from the country's statistics office showed on Thursday.
Foreign tourists accounted for 94.1% of all overnight stays in August, the data indicated.
Tourism is a key industry for Croatia, generating around a fifth of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
The number of domestics tourists increased 3.8% on the year to 260,741 in August, taking the total number of tourists to 4 million, up 3% on the year.
The number of overnights spent by Croatian citizens rose 2.9% on the year to 1.5 million in August, taking the total number of tourist overnights to 25.5 million, an increase of 7.3% year-on-year.
Croatia's biggest feeder markets in August were Germany with a share of 26.1%, Italy with 11%, and Slovenia with 8.7%.
In August, the highest number of overnight stays, 13.8 million or 54.3% of the total, were in rooms to let, apartments, studio-type suites and summer houses.
In January-August, tourist arrivals in Croatia increased 7.1% and the number of overnights rose 8.2% to 64.9 million, of which 92.8% were spent by foreigners.
In 2015, tourist arrivals in Zagreb city and on Croatia's Adriatic coast rose 8.3% to 14.2 million and overnights increased 6.8% to 78.6 million.
