June 7 (SeeNews) - China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) expressed interest in the construction of gas-fired power plants in Serbia, the Serbian government said.
CMEC is interested in a project for the construction of gas-fired power plants in Serbian cities suffering from high air pollution due to the use of coal as a primary energy source, the president of the country's coordination council for cooperation with China and Russia, Tomislav Nikolic, said on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the government.
The Chinese company has experience in the construction of similar power plants in Belarus, Nigeria and Pakistan, the deputy managing director of CMEC, Tong Zigang, said during a meeting with Nikolic on Wednesday.
In November, the Belgrade city government said it signed a contract with CMEC for construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Serbia's capital. A total of 260 million euro ($307.4 million) will be invested in the construction of the wastewater treatment plant, which will begin in the second half of 2018.
