CHISINAU (Moldova), October 9 (SeeNews) – Austrian construction group Strabag has launched operations in Moldova by opening a representative office in the country's capital Chisinau, the Moldovan Economy Ministry said on Tuesday.
"Strabag is interested in participating in infrastructure projects in Moldova, especially in road construction," the ministry quoted Strabag's manager in Moldova, Valeriu Bodiu, as saying.
Strabag is a leading European construction group which employs nearly 60,000.
It says that from its core markets of Austria and Germany it is present via subsidiaries in all countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, in selected markets in Western Europe and the Arab Peninsula, as well as in Canada, Chile, China and India. Strabag's turnover reached 11 billion euro ($15.4 billion) in 2006.
Bodiu said that technologies used by Strabag allow road construction in record terms with a guarantee from 10 to 60 years.
Some 67% of Moldova's first-class roads and more than 75% of the second-class roads are in poor condition due to insufficient maintenance and upgrade in the past 15 years. Poor infrastructure in Moldova hampers the inflow of foreign investments to the ex-Soviet country.
