July 28 (SeeNews) - Albania’s parliament voted against the proposed impeachment of president Ilir Meta over his decision to cancel the 2019 local elections.
Parliament accepted the conclusions of a parliamentary committee of inquiry that there are no strong reasons to dismiss the head of state, it said in a press release on Monday, adding that the committee has suggested drafting new legislation on the powers of the president.
The inquiry committee was set up in July 2019, based on a motion for Meta's impeachment signed by 55 MPs.
In June 2019, Meta canceled the local elections set for June 30 after the main opposition parties decided to boycot the vote, accusing the government of corruption and vote-buying in the previous elections.
