TIRANA (Albania), January 29 (SeeNews) – Albanian power corporation KESH said on Tuesday it launched a feasibility study for the construction of a hydropower plant (HPP) on the Drin river cascade in the northern part of the country.
The 21-month feasibility study for the Skavica HPP will be conducted with the support of a group of consultants from Infrastructure Project Facility - Technical Assistance 6 (IPF 6) and financed by the Western Balkan Investment Frakmework (WBIF), KESH said in a statement posted in Facebook.
This phase of the project is supported by the WBIF with a fund worth 1.5 million euro ($1.71 million), awarded to KESH in the 16th WBIF steering committee meeting held in 2017, the corporation noted, adding that Skavica HPP is an ambitious and significant project in the framework of a project for reforming and further developing the Albanian power sector.
No information was provided on the capacity or cost of the project.
Last week KESH said it turned to an unaudited net profit of 10.0 billion leks in 2018 from an audited net loss of 52.7 million leks in 2017, as net electricity production almost doubled.
KESH's net electricity production increased to 5.6 million MWh from 2.9 million MWh in 2017.
Albania produces over 90% of its electricity at hydro power plants (HPP). Most of it is generated at three power plants along the Drin River, in the northern part of the country.
