June 18 (SeeNews) - Croatian electrical equipment manufacturer Koncar Elektroindustrija [ZSE:KOEI] said on Tuesday that its unit Koncar - Distribution and Special Transformers (D&ST) [ZSE:KODT,KODT2] has teamed up with its long-term customer, Swedish electricity distribution company Ellevio, to develop environmentally friendly transformers for the green transition.

Ellevio and D&ST have initiated a pilot project to develop and manufacture ten distribution transformers with rated capacities of 100 and 800 kVA, using high-quality bluemint steel from German Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel, Koncar said in its monthly newsletter.

"This cutting-edge steel, produced using hydrogen, reduces CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional methods, while maintaining all the properties of conventional transformer steels," it said. This has been validated by transformer testing results and verified by independent audit bodies.

This pilot project was designed to meet the needs of the Swedish local grid, including the installation of about seven kilometres of new cable in the Gullspang area, northeastern Sweden. Along with the new cables, three new substations will be set up, where Ellevio plans to use D&ST's bluemint steel transformers.

The project will use electric construction machinery and equipment, along with transformers, substations, cables, and pipes made from more sustainable materials with a reduced carbon footprint. An electric truck with a crane will be used for transporting the substations.

Koncar’s shares last traded on Monday on the Zagreb bourse, ending 0.76% lower at 260 euro ($279).

Preferred shares of Koncar D&ST traded 0.65% higher at 1,560 euro on Tuesday morning. Its ordinary shares closed 0.63% lower at 1,580 euro on Monday.
