 The Automotive Cluster Bulgaria (ACB) is a non-profit organisation which represents the interests of the automotive industry in Bulgaria (manufacturers, suppliers and organisations providing services for the automotive industry). It fosters synergies between members, supporting their business growth and competitiveness through participation in international joint projects, case studies and professional automotive qualification programmes. Lyubomir Stanislavov is a founder, CEO and Member of the Board of Directors of Automotive Cluster Bulgaria (ACB).

Mr. Stanislavov, how are software solutions being implemented in electric vehicles and what advancements or innovations have been made in this area recently?

In the present era, we are amidst several pivotal revolutions within the automotive realm, with electrification standing as one of the foremost. This transformative shift brings forth fresh hurdles to surmount within the sector, necessitating a paradigm shift in technological advancement. Amidst this evolution, software emerges as a linchpin, guiding the transition towards electric mobility. The modern vehicle transcends mere electrification; it embodies the concept of a "Software Defined Vehicle" within the industry lexicon. Modern automotive software not only shapes the form and function but also delineates the technical prowess of model automobiles. In the contemporary landscape, it stands as the most costly and lucrative facet of the forthcoming automotive landscape.

It is my firm belief that automotive software epitomises the technical prowess distinguishing us from our primary competitors in Central and Eastern Europe. Already, intricate software solutions are taking shape, exemplified by innovations like Mercedes' MBUX system, advancements in the "Interior Autonomous Driving system," and pioneering approaches to monetizing or reserving charging stations. This technological advantage not only positions us as leaders in the automotive landscape but also fosters economic growth and innovation within our region. Moreover, our commitment to advancing automotive software extends beyond individual innovations; it encompasses a collaborative ecosystem where industry stakeholders, research institutions, and government bodies converge to drive progress. 

As we navigate the complexities of the evolving automotive industry, it is imperative that we continue to invest in talent development and research initiatives. By nurturing a skilled workforce and fostering a culture of innovation, we can sustain our competitive edge and propel our region towards a prosperous future in the global automotive arena.

Can you provide insights into the battery technologies being utilised in the automotive industry, especially in Bulgaria's automotive ecosystem? How are these technologies evolving, and what impact do they have on the development of electric vehicles?

Today, approximately 40% of global new car sales are attributed to pure electric vehicles or those with some form of electrification, including various hybrid models. A notable trend in current battery technology, particularly evident in the latest iterations of LFP and NMC batteries, is their significantly enhanced safety features. Instances of spontaneous combustion have become virtually non-existent, while the increased number of charging cycles ensures a battery lifespan that exceeds the lifespan of the vehicle itself.

In Bulgaria, the automotive industry is advancing rapidly, with the production of aluminium battery enclosures and inverters for a wide range of car brands already underway. Additionally, significant investments are being made in the development of comprehensive infrastructure, including cabling and ancillary components, to support the burgeoning electric vehicle market.

Looking ahead, the next generation of batteries, such as semi-solid state and solid state variants, holds great promise. These batteries are poised to redefine the standards of safety, longevity, and energy density in the automotive sector. With expectations of double the charging cycles, extended lifespan, and substantially increased energy storage capacity, these advancements pave the way for electric vehicles with unprecedented range capabilities.

Excitingly, Bulgaria has announced plans for the establishment of a Gigafactory dedicated to Solid State batteries, signalling a significant leap forward in the country's automotive sector. This ambitious project underscores the country’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, positioning it as a key player in the global transition towards electric mobility. As these advancements continue to unfold, collaboration between industry stakeholders, research institutions, and government entities will be crucial to harnessing their full potential. 

What has been the progress and development of the automotive sector in Bulgaria up to this point? Are there any notable achievements, challenges, or trends that have shaped its trajectory?

In fact, the automotive industry stands out as the most rapidly advancing sector within the country's economy over the past 12 years. We take immense pride in the fact that close to 80-90% of components found in European car models are manufactured right here in Bulgaria. Presently, the country hosts a thriving ecosystem of over 350 companies, collectively contributing around 12% to the national GDP and providing employment opportunities for over 85,000 skilled specialists.

A pivotal driver shaping the trajectory of this sector is the relentless pursuit of modernisation and automation across production processes. Through the seamless integration of robotics and cutting-edge digital technologies, companies are revolutionising manufacturing practices, thus bolstering their competitiveness on the global stage. Moreover, Bulgaria has emerged as a coveted destination for foreign investors, drawn by its strategic location and conducive business environment. 

Looking ahead, as the automotive industry continues to evolve, Bulgaria remains poised to capitalise on emerging opportunities and overcome challenges through strategic investments in talent development, infrastructure, and sustainable practices.
