The Istocni Srem water supply system will serve the needs of more than 200,000 people in 65 towns and villages in the municipalities of Ruma, Pecinci, Irig, Stara Pazova and Indjija. The project has been approved by the Serbian state administration ministry and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the municipality said in a statement on Friday when the agreement was signed.

The project will be developed in several stages and is expected to be completed within 15 years.

Works will first start at the Hrtkovacka Draga water source where a water factory will be built. Thereafter, a north and a south legs of the water supply system will be built to bring fresh water to all five municipalities, according to the statement.
