June 9 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to start next year the construction of an 835 million euro ($940 million) high-speed road linking Sombor, in the country's north, to the border with Romania, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic has said.
The government expects to complete the technical documentation for the 175 km-long road by the end of 2020, Mihajlovic said in a press release on Monday.
The road will connect Romania, Hungary and Serbia and will contribute to the industrial development of northern Serbia, Mihajlovic said.
In November, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic said the government plans to start the construction of a high-speed road linking Sombor to the town of Kikinda located near the Nakovo crossing at the border with Romania.
Serbia will start the construction of motorways with a total length of 400 km in the short term and will have the longest network of highways in Southeast Europe by the end of 2025, Mihajlovic said in January.
