Romania's energy output down 4.2% in Jan-April

June 14 (SeeNews) - Romania's energy output fell by an annual 4.2% in the first four months of 2024, to 5.885 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), the statistical office said on Friday, citing provisional data.

Romania's energy resources, including imports, totalled 10.291 million TOE in the four months through April, down 3.3% on the year, the statistical office said in a statement. Imports amounted to 4.406 million TOE, down by an annual 2%.

Romania's own electricity output and imports totalled 22.836 TWh in January-April, inching down by 1.2% year-on-year. Imports accounted for 14.9% of the aggregate.

Thermal power plants generated some 6.131 TWh of electricity in the first four months of 2024, decreasing their output by 4.6% on the year, while the output of hydropower stations fell by an annual 14% to 5.893 TWh.

Electricity generation by Cernavoda, Romania’s sole nuclear power plant, edged down by 0.5% to 3.983 TWh in January-April. Wind farms generated some 2.631 TWh of electricity, down by an annual 16.5%, while solar plants generated 800.4 GWh, up 37%.

Final electricity consumption inched up by an annual 0.1% to 16.744 TWh in January-April.

Romania’s electricity exports decreased by an annual 4.6% to 4.172 TWh in the first four months of the year, while imports jumped 57% to 3.398 TWh.

The country produced 903,900 TOE of crude oil, down 3.8% on the year, and 634,000 TOE of coal, down 19%, in January-Apil. Natural gas production rose 13% year-on-year, reaching 2.569 million TOE.

Romania's energy production fell 0.8% to 17.9 million TOE in 2023.

TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
