November 15 (SeeNews) - Romanian online retailer eMAG said it sold over 2.2 million products worth a total of 609 million lei ($141 million/ 123 million euro) to Black Friday shoppers on November 12, up by 4% compared to the 2020 edition.
Approximately 56.7% of all orders were paid for online with a bank card, eMAG said in a press release on Saturday.
"Customers ordered from all categories, there bought many products for home and garden, gadgets, cosmetics and personal care products, but also clothes and gifts for the winter holidays," eMAG general manager Tudor Manea said.
Earlier this month, eMAG said it expects 615 million lei in Black Friday sales.
EMAG counted on a 4.5 million euro ($5.19 million) investment in servers, hosting and cloud services to sustain the event. Also, the online retailer hired an extra 600 people in its customer care and warehouse services this year in preparation for Black Friday.
An earlier investment of 100 million euro in a new warehouse in Joita, Giurgiu county, ensured the necessary space for additional stocks of products purchased especially for Black Friday.
Last year, eMag booked 585.7 million lei in Black Friday sales.
Black Friday is the shopping day immediately after the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving, which retailers consider to mark the start of the Christmas shopping season. This year, Black Friday falls on November 27 in the U.S.
EMAG was founded in 2001 by Romanian entrepreneurs and later expanded in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland.
The online retailer booked revenues of 8.93 billion lei in 2020.
