November 20 (SeeNews) - Romanian online retailer eMag said on Tuesday it has sold over 3 million products worth a total of 460 million lei ($113 million/ 99 million euro) to Black Friday shoppers on November 16.
Approximately 34% of all orders were paid for online with a bank card, eMag said in a press release.
"On Black Friday, online trade goes beyond traditional trade, and this year's edition exceeded our expectations in terms of sales. Increasing trust in online marketing and eMAG is the result of constantly improved services, transparency of the online environment, the diversity of products and better prices than traditional retail. These are the four directions we focus on eMAG to make online trade accessible to everyone," eMag CEO Iulian Stanciu said.
The online retailer counted on its new warehouse to sustain deliveries for Black Friday. With a surface area of 126,000 square meters (20 football fields) and a capacity of 2 million large and medium volume products, the new space is the largest warehouse in Southeast Europe.
Last year eMag booked 360 million lei in Black Friday sales.
In the United States, where the tradition of Black Friday comes from, this is the shopping day immediately after the holiday of Thanksgiving. Retailers believe it marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. This year, Black Friday falls on November 23 in the U.S.
Online retailer eMag was founded in 2001 by Romanian entrepreneurs, and later expanded in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland.
South Africa-based Naspers media group acquired a 70% stake in eMag in 2012.
