July 1 (SeeNews) - Nuclearelectrica [BSE:SNN], the operator of Romania's sole nuclear power plant (NPP) Cernavoda, said Unit 1 has been reconnected to the grid on June 29, after having been shut down in controlled mode on May 19 for maintenance works.

During the outage, Nuclearelectrica carried out preventive and corrective maintenance as well as mandatory testing on Unit 1, the company said in a press release on Saturday. Planned maintenance is performed every two years at each of the power plant's two operating units.

"The works were executed in safe conditions for the plant personnel, the public and the environment, according to the approved procedures used at Cernavoda," Nuclearelectrica said.

Earlier this month, Nuclearelectrica signed a CAD 360 million ($262.9 million/245.5 million euro) deal with Canadian Nuclear Partners for services related to refurbishing Unit 1. In February, Italian power engineering company Ansaldo Energia said that its unit Ansaldo Nucleare has agreed to overhaul Unit 1 and help develop two more units at the Cernavoda NPP, backed by up to 2 billion euro in financing from Italian state investment agency SACE.

The Romanian state, through the ministry of energy, owns an 82.5% stake in Nuclearelectrica, while the remainder is in free float on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. Nuclearelectrica's shares traded 0.44% lower at 45.5 lei ($9.79/9.14 euro) as at 1055 CET on July 1 on the Bucharest bourse.
