There were no victims in the accident that occurred in the gasoline hydrorefining installation and the situation is under the control of the intervention forces who are cooling down the facility, KMG International said in a statement.
The ignition happened in the context of the ongoing general turnaround of the Petromidia refinery, during which operations are stopped to facilitate the maintenance and modernisation of production units. Rompetrol Rafinare launched the modernisation works earlier this month.
In 2023, Rompetrol booked a preliminary consolidated net loss of $270.5 million (250.8 million euro) on a consolidated gross turnover of $5.33 billion.
Rompetrol Rafinare is part of KMG International, formerly The Rompetrol Group, which is fully owned by Kazakhstan's state-owned energy company KazMunayGas Group. Rompetrol Rafinare’s main shareholders are KMG International at 48.1% and the Romanian state, which holds a 44.7% stake, while the remaining 7.2% is in free float on the Bucharest bourse. Rompetrol Rafinare operates two oil refineries, with Petromidia Navodari being the largest in Romania.
Rompetrol's shares traded 1.37% higher at 0.074 lei as at 1213 CET on Friday on the BVB.
