The fire and the subsequent smoke release that occurred at pump in the basement of the turbine building at Unit 2 did not affect the nuclear safety of the plant, which kept operating at nominal power and within normal parameters, Nuclearelectrica said in a statement.

"The equipment is currently being isolated and investigations are underway to identify the cause," the NPP operator noted.

The Romanian state, through the ministry of energy, owns an 82.5% stake in Nuclearelectrica, while the remainder is in free float on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

Blue-chip Nuclearelectrica's shares traded 0.22% lower at 45.2 lei ($9.76/9.08 euro) as at 1643 CET on Tuesday.
