January 11 (SeeNews) - AES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said on Tuesday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo recorded an all-time high annual electricity production of 3.3 million MWh last year.
The electricity produced by the plant's two units last year is 20% higher than the 2020 level and the highest since the start of their commercial operation in 2011, AES Bulgaria said in a press release.
TPP AES Galabovo provided over 9% of all electricity used in Bulgaria during 2021, the company added.
In December alone, the coal-fired power plant generated 356,000 MWh of electricity, almost 50% above the November volume.
After the successful repair campaign of the plant's first and second blocks in 2021, it is fully ready for work under winter conditions according to Bulgarian Electricity System Operator (ESO)'s schedule for meeting the country's energy needs, AES Bulgaria also said in the press release.
In 1999, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation purchased the majority interest in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 project, renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
