May 7 (SeeNews) - Serbia has started construction on a national football stadium in Surcin, a municipality of the city of Belgrade, president Aleksandar Vucic said.
The facility is expected to be completed by December 1, 2026, and will host the UEFA Europa League final in 2028, Vucic said, as quoted in a press release by his office following the groundbreaking ceremony last Wednesday.
According to local media reports, the government plans to invest 350 million euro ($376.9 million) in the project.
The Serbian national football team currently plays most of their home matches at Red Star's Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade.
The 52,000-seat stadium will be part of the EXPO 2027 complex.
Last April, local daily newspaper Blic reported that construction work was due to begin by the end of last year.
Infrastructure work will be carried out by China's Power Construction Corporation (PowerChina).
