March 9 (SeeNews) - Romania's transport minister Sorin Grindeanu said that Bucharest underground system operator Metrorex signed a 1.2 billion lei ($264 million/243 million euro) contract with a Turkish consortium comprised of Alsim Alarko and Makyol for the construction a 6.6 km section that will link the capital city with the Henri Coanda International Airport in Otopeni.
The section will have six subway stop, Grindeanu wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.
The funding for the project is provided from the state budget and European funds.
The consortium has four years to complete the works.
The section is part of the 14.2 km M6 line for which Romania's transport ministry and Metrorex signed a 6.334 billion lei financing contract in November 2020. The M6 line will have 12 stations and will connect Bucharest's biggest railway station with the international airport.
The European Commission approved the financing for the M6 line in September 2018.
In September 2020, Romania inaugurated the fifth line of Bucharest metro following a 3.2 billion lei investment co-funded by the EU.
Alsim Alarko is an engineering and construction contracting unit of Turkish industrial conglomerate Alarko Holding.
