The two new aircraft will each have a capacity of 189 seats and will contribute to the standardisation of Tarom's fleet, enabling lower operating costs for the company, it said in a press release on Tuesday.
The value of the leasing contract was not disclosed.
"The acquisition of new aircraft is a measure that is part of TAROM's recovery plan and was a basic condition for the approval of state aid by the European Commission. Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft play an important role in strengthening TAROM's market position and renewing the company's fleet," Tarom said.
In April, the European Commission approved a Romanian government's restructuring scheme of up to 473.7 million lei ($102.4 million/95.1 million euro) to support the pandemic-hit flag carrier Tarom. The restructuring plan has four main objectives - fleet renewal, flight route optimisation, improving organisational efficiency, and cost optimisation, the flag carrier said in a press release back then.
Established in 1954, Tarom operates a fleet of 18 planes on 70 destinations.
