March 21 (SeeNews) - The share of women working in the technology sector is highest in Bulgaria, a global ranking published by Germany-based technology-focused job platform showed.
In Bulgaria 30.28% of all people employed in information and communication technology sector (ICT) are women, Honeypot said in its 2018 Women in Tech Index. The ranking covers 41 countries which are part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the EU.
Bulgaria's northern neighbour Romania placed third with a 26.3% share. The other two Southeast European (SEE) countries included in the ranking, Slovenia and Croatia, took the 18th and 33rd place with a share of 17.45% and 13.19%, respectively.
However, in SEE Bulgaria had the highest gender pay gap of 19.2% in the technology sector, followed by Romania with 19.1% and Slovenia with 16.2%. Croatia performed best in the region as women working in ICT were paid 13% less than men.
All sectors considered, gender pay gap in SEE was biggest in Bulgaria at 15.4% and smallest - 5.8% - in Romania, placing the country third in the ranking according to this indicator.
"That this index shows the gender pay gap actually increased in 17 countries over five years may come as a surprise to many." says Emma Tracey, Co-Founder at Honeypot.
