The handover of the building started on July 1, the systems are being tested and the process of obtaining the necessary permits is underway, Zdravkovic said on Tuesday in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug. The official opening will take place once these procedures are completed, he added.
In March, infrastructure minister Goran Vesic said the country is investing over 10 million euro ($11 million) in the construction of the new terminal, which will have the capacity to handle 1.5 million passengers per year.
In 2023, the Nis Airport serviced 448,312 passengers, up 15% on the year.
According to earlier media reports, the existing terminal, built in 1986, is designed to service 100,000 passengers annually.
In January, Zdravkovic said that once the new terminal opens for passengers, the old terminal will be demolished and the construction of a new one will begin on its site.
