March 29 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to start building a national athletics stadium in the capital Belgrade by the end of this year, local media reported on Friday.
Completion of the works is expected in 2027, news agency Beta quoted president Aleksandar Vucic as saying after a meeting with the president of the international association of athletics federations, Sebastian Coe.
This arena will enable Serbia to apply as a host country for the World Athletics Championships and European Athletics Championships.
Earlier Vucic said that the stadium will be built in the Belgrade district of Surcin, in the vicinity of a national football stadium on which construction is due to begin on May 1, at a cost of 350 million euro ($ 377.9 million).
Also in 2027, Serbia will host the international exhibition Belgrade Expo and plans to invest 17.8 billion euro in preparations, with the majority of this sum going towards the construction of facilities.
