June 29 (SeeNews) - Serbia opened for traffic a new 9.74-km section of the Belgrade bypass, which runs from Strazevica to Bubanj Potok, the government said.
The section will help move truck traffic out of the city centre, president Aleksandar Vucic was quoted as saying in a press release on Wednesday.
The construction was carried out by China's Power Construction Corporation (PowerChina), Azerbaijan's civil engineering company and local subcontractors. Serbia financed 15% of the project, with the remaining 85% coming in the form of a loan from China’s Exim Bank.
Construction on the final 31-km section of the bypass road between Bubanj Potok and Pancevo, also known as Sector C, is expected to begin shortly. Sector C will cost around 500 million euro ($545.7 million) and is considered to be the most complex part of the project, as its construction involves building a bridge over the Danube, 11 viaducts and two tunnels.
In April 2019, Serbia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PowerChina and Azvirt for the construction of Sector C.
