March 30 (SeeNews) - Serbia invited bids in a tender worth 29 million euro ($32.3 million) to remove from the Danube 21 German vessels sunk during World War II, the infrastructure ministry said on Wednesday.
The ships' remains narrow the waterway down to just 90 metres, half its width, the ministry said in a statement.
The vessels, sunk by the German army in 1945 in a bid to slow down the advancements of the Soviet army, are located downstream from the Djerdap 2 hydropower plant.
The funds for the project were secured by the European Investment Bank and via European Union's Western Balkans Investment Framework funds, according to the ministry.
