November 4 (SeeNews) - Romanian railway operator CFR said on Friday it has signed a contract worth 1.44 billion lei ($286 million/294 million euro) with Italian companies WeBuild, Partecipazioni Italia and Salcef for the upgrade of a railway segment.
The contract has a duration of 42 months, of which six months for the design stage and 36 months for the execution stage, CFR said in a press release.
The targeted railway segment between Timisoara Est and Ronat Triaj has a length of 13.86 km and is part of the 162 km-long Caransebes-Timisoara-Arad railway section.
Following modernisation works, the railway will support travel speed of up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains.
The investment will also include the modernisation of a number of passages, railway stations and the installation of solar panels on top of some CFR buildings.
The financing is provided from non-reimbursable funds under the EU-backed National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, PNRR.
CFR was founded in 1880 and currently manages approximately 10,628 km of railway infrastructure.
