Romania to get 34 mln euro in EU funds for drought recovery

The country experienced a severe drought between March and August 2022 due to reduced rainfall, which had widespread consequences, including crop failures, forest fires, and water scarcity for the population in many regions, the Commission said.

Funds will be provided from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) and the assistance will cover part of the costs of emergency and recovery operations, such as rescue services, interventions to support the immediate needs of the population, repair of damaged infrastructure, and general clean-up of disaster-stricken areas.

The EUSF provides financial assistance to member states and accession countries to mitigate the financial burden caused by major natural disasters and health emergencies. Since 2002, the fund has mobilised over 8.2 billion euro for 127 disasters.
