May 19 (SeeNews) - U.S.-based defense contractor Raytheon Technologies said that it has signed a contract with Romanian authorities for the delivery of Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Coastal Defense Systems.
Built by the Raytheon Missiles & Defense division in partnership with Norwegian company Kongsberg, the system will bolster Romania’s defensive advantage against high-end maritime targets, Raytheon said in a press release on Tuesday.
"Romania will now join the U.S. Navy and two other NATO allies in operating the latest generation anti-ship cruise missile available today," Kim Ernzen, vice president of Naval Power at Raytheon Missiles & Defense, said in the press release.
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
The NSM engages targets at distances greater than 100 nautical miles and flies at very low altitudes. Of particular importance to Romania, due to its diverse topography, is that NSM can climb and descend according to the terrain, Raytheon said.
In September, Romania received the first Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM) system from Raytheon, and is expecting three more by the end of 2022.
Romania, which joined NATO in 2004, plans to spend 9.8 billion euro until 2026 to boost its defence capabilities.
