June 19 (SeeNews) - Romania will buy three battalion-level 155mm howitzer systems, including 54 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers from South Korean arms manufacturer Hanwha Aerospace, which has won the competitive procedure for the arms purchase, the Romanian defence ministry said.

Defence minister Angel Tilvar met with his South Korean counterpart Won-sik Shin during the latter's official visit in Romania, the Romanian defence ministry said in a press release.

The total value of the transaction is $920 million (857 million euro), making it Romania's largest arms acquisition in the past seven years, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

The purchase of the howitzer systems comes on the back of multiple other arms deals meant to strengthen Romania's defence capabilities in the context of Russia's aggression on Ukraine, including acquisitions of Patriot missiles, Sidewinder missiles, and Marte ER missiles.

In April, the two ministers signed an agreement on defence cooperation in Seoul.
