October 25 (SeeNews) - Romania's government decided to tighten restrictions for unvaccinated people as of Monday in an attempt to curb a surge in new cases of the coronavirus infection, it said.
Holding a green certificate, certifying that a person has been vaccinated or has recovered from the coronavirus, is becoming compulsory for entering shopping malls, restaurants, public institutions or going to work, the government said in a statement on Friday evening.
Furthermore, a nationwide curfew from 10pm until 5am is being reintroduced, and wearing masks is again compulsory in all public places.
All companies active in trade or services are obliged to close at 9pm. These restrictions do not apply to pharmacies, petrol stations and delivery companies.
On Monday, the Romanian authorities reported 9.187 new cases of Covid-19 and 301 deaths, bringing the total count to over 1.56 million and the death toll to 44,679, health ministry data showed.
Romania, with a population of 19 million, started an anti-coronavirus vaccination campaign on December 27. As of October 24, 6.41 million people have been vaccinated with the first dose, 5.92 million people have received both doses of the coronavirus vaccine, while 706,662 have received the third dose, official health ministry data showed.
Earlier this month, the European Commission said it has mobilised resources under the Civil Protection Mechanism to help Romania treat the high number of acute Covid-19 patients following a request for assistance from the country.
