August 31 (SeeNews) - The Romanian municipality of Constanta finalised the modernisation of its Palas water treatment plant, the EU funds ministry said on Friday.
The total investment in the station amounted to 24.47 million lei (6.1 million/ 5.2 million euro), of which 13.91 million lei was EU co-financing from the Cohesion Fund, the EU funds ministry said in a press release.
The investment directly contributes to obtaining high quality drinking water through modern technology and ensures continuous water supply, the ministry said.
Palas station now has a larger storage capacity of treated water which enables it to operate autonomously in the event of damage, a water pumping capacity to serve approximately 350,000 inhabitants through nine power lines and permanent monitoring of the quality of the treated water.
This is one of the most important investments made through a larger project for the rehabilitation and modernisation of the water supply and sewerage system in the Constanta - Ialomita region.
The project, amounting to 238 million euro ($278 million), was implemented by water utility RAJA SA Constanta, mostly under the 2007-2013 Sectoral Operational Program Environment and will be finalized with funds related to the Large Infrastructure Operational Program for the 2014-2020 period.
