January 13 (SeeNews) - The airports in Varna and Burgas recorded double-digit growth in passenger numbers in 2016, Germany’s Fraport Group, which operates the two Bulgarian airports, said on Friday.
Burgas airport was closed in November and December due to an overhaul of taxiways.
Passenger traffic at Varna airport rose 20.8% year-on-year to 1.69 million in 2016, while passenger numbers at Burgas airport totalled 2.9 million, a 22% increase compared with 2015, Fraport said in a statement.
The number of landings and takeoffs at Varna airport increased 23.9% on the year to 14,818, while those at Burgas airport rose 14.2% to 20,873.
Cargo handled at Varna airport more than doubled to 3,293 tonnes, while Burgas airport processed 10,877 tonnes of cargo, 18% lower on the year.
In December alone, passengers at Varna airport increased by 22.4% year-on-year to 36,244.
Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, a 60/40 joint venture of Fraport and Bulgarian company BM Star, won a 35-year concession to manage the two airports on the Black Sea coast in 2006.
